A Summer Spell for Hopeful Hearts

As July gets going, many of us will be heading to the beach. Whether we are fortunate enough to live near the coast, taking a day trip, or going on holiday in the UK or abroad, for many, the beach is associated with happy carefree times for us and our families.
From Sea Glass to Sea Shells
Whether you are spending time with children or walking on the beach as an adult, there is nothing quite like spotting something beautiful. From a piece of sea glass to a perfectly formed shell, many of us gather things such as small bits of driftwood, shells, and even different coloured sand to take home as mementos.
If this sounds like you, why not take things one step further this summer and turn your beach collection into a craft project? Places like Hobbycraft have plenty of inspiration, from heart-shaped objects to mirrors or even resin paperweight kits that would allow you to decorate something that could be hung up or placed somewhere you frequent in your home. It doesn’t need to be large, elaborate, or look like something made on Blue Peter! Just a little nod to the freedoms the beach and holidays mean to you.
Pick-Me-Up
During any time of the year, if you or your loved ones require a small pick-me-up, simply touch your beach memento to reminisce about your joyful outing. If you ever need additional encouragement, go a step beyond and vocalise your Hopeful Hearts Spell for added support.
Spell for Hopeful Hearts
“May my wish come true, under the moon’s light,
Bring my family’s desires to fruition tonight,
Blessings upon each and every one of us.”
Interpretations
You might be surprised to learn that many common beach mementos have significant meanings. Of course, where you go will determine what is available – but here are some things to get you started.
- Sand, pebbles, and sea glass all represent the earth. It is worth placing the pebbles and sea glass in the north of your design.
- Feathers, seagrass, and pampas grass represent the air element and would be great in the east of your project.
- Driftwood represents the fire element and should be placed in the south of your keepsake.
- Shells can represent earth and water, and can go in the west and north of your memento.
- Clam and mussel shells represent purification, love, and good fortune.
- Cowrie shells symbolise fertility, prosperity, and luck.
- Cockles signify purity, fertility, and travel.
- Conch shells represent communication and divinity.
- Limpets denote courage, confidence and strength.
Being mindful of local regulations on collecting shells and natural items from the beach is important. In certain places, it might be against the law to take any natural materials. It’s best to only gather what you require and leave the majority for the ecosystem.
